The Dianthus or Pinks and
Carnations are in the CARYOPHYLLACEAE Family, which also includes other
show genera like Arenaria, Cerastium, Gypsophila,
Silene
and Lychnis. Dianthus
have swollen nodes and opposite leaves. They are annuals or perennials
with bisexual flowers with 5 petals making up the Corolla (The colored
part of the flowers) Flowers have 5 or 10 stamens and in most cases have
notched petals.
There are over 250 species with all most all of them having relatively
large showy flowers.Most are native
to Europe and Central Asia, Asia Minor and the Mediterranean region. One
species is native to North America with a number of the annuals escaped
as “weeds”.
Plants are low growing with few growing over 15 inches tall, many are
mat forming or cushion forming.Some
species are sub-shrubby with new growth forming from semi-woody stems or
even evergreen.Most are prized
as cut flowers and many have fragrant flowers.Grass
like leaves on stems with swollen nodes, Leaves and stems in many forms
have a blue green color, giving them an attractive appearance even when
not in bloom.
The Dianthus like sunny, well drained, lime based soils.Drought
tolerant and best adapted to dryer soils as apposed to moist soils-were
they will be short lived. Great
Rock garden plants or stonewalls or the front of the boarder. If
you have rich-moisture retentive soil it is helpful to mix in a generous
amount of sand. Plants for
the most part are easy to raise from seed and many will bloom the first
year if sown early.
Most Species and forms have a germination rate around 75%. With a few
species around 50 %.
